You could argue that dropping down 100 feet in small increments while wearing full plate armor would be clumsy in real life, but the Souls series is meant to be about fairness and the controls don’t allow for precision platforming - bumping off a wall on the way down and bouncing to your doom is never fun.ĭemon’s Souls also doesn’t have estus flasks - the healing items you use in Dark Souls that replenish upon death and at checkpoints - and instead relies on healing items. Some things FromSoftware improved in the Dark Souls series are still maddeningly frustrating here, like when you need to drop down onto platforms to make your way deeper into the mines. This approach to a remake does come with its own issues, however - it means the developer brings over some of the less refined aspects of the original game.

It also suffers a little from some trial and error boss encounters (instant-fail stealth boss, anyone?) and clumsy platforming, which I’ll get to later. It doesn’t quite have the same level of consistency as the world of Dark Souls, with its intricate, looping, seamless world, instead opting for a series of levels with their own smaller loops and shortcuts. The game plays exactly as it did, its soul intact - it just looks, runs, and sounds better.

The original game code - the computer language that powers the PS3 release - is completely intact and untouched underneath the gloss and the sheen. It’s a good game, just not that much to it besides a cute & lovely looking aesthetic & a zen soundtrack. You see, Bluepoint sees Demon’s Souls as sacred, too.

It’s a soothing time and did leave me wishing there was more to do afterwards, I nearly Platinum’d the game on the first playthrough and I only missed 1 trophy. It was a fun and calming 2 hour game, but the $40 retail price is wayyyy too much to ask for at this time. What I didn’t exactly expect is to finish the game in one sitting! I rented the game so when I hit the final area (which was spoiled in a review of the game for me) I was a little surprised to say the least. It’s VERY simple and that’s totally fine! These types of games always have a place in the world. It was definitely relaxing & made me temporarily forget about the awful day I had! The music and atmosphere of Hoa is impeccable, but the gameplay isn’t as stellar. I definitely chose the right time to play this game, I had an extremely stressful day (more than usual) and had heard this game is a good way to unwind after a long hard day. I definitely chose Wasn’t too sure what to expect going in besides a beautifully made but short journey & that’s exactly what we got with Hoa.
